Our knives are handcrafted from some of the
highest quality steels then heat treated for maximum performance for
each individual application. We generally work with 2 primary types of steel. The first is our high carbon stainless steel. This steel is formulated to give excellent edge holding ability while maintaining the beautiful shine of stain free steel. This is used in our kitchen knives, our fillet and boning knives, and our ulu knives. The second steel we work with is a high carbon "spring" steel known as 1095. This steel gives our knives an extra strong, extra tough, edge holding ability, but does not have the stain free feature of our first steel. We use this steel mainly on our hunting and sporting knives. Since 1095 spring steel is not a stainless steel, we finish the blade with a matte gray finish known as "Parkerizing". This durable finish helps the blade resist tarnish and rust. Our handles are made from a material called "Dymondwood" ®. This is a very colorful wood that is made from thin hardwood veneers that have been dyed and pressed together, with a strong bonding resign, to form plywood like sheets of multicolored woods. This is how we are able to get such exotic color patterns in our finished handles. |

| Our Ironwork is hand forged on site in
our Amana, Iowa workshop. This offers a unique product that is
made the way it was done in the "old days". The iron is heated in a coal fired forge and pounded to shape using basic tools like a hammer and anvil. Each piece is worked with great attention to every detail. Once finished at the forge the piece is then tumbled in a rock tumbler to remove any scale that was created in the heating process. Next a finish is applied to keep the finished piece looking good for many years to come. Certain days you can watch as the blacksmith works to create these works of art right before your eyes. Kids (and adults) of all ages enjoy seeing a bit of the past come to life in our Amana shop. This shop is an historic Amana building that was built in 1860 and also houses the Industrial Machine Shop Museum which features many machine tools, some dating back to 1860. The museum is free to tour. For more information about this shop and the Amana colonies visit www.amanacolonies.com |
